The expressions captured by the keen sensibility of Makonde artists living in the natural environment are fascinating. Some of the expressions appear humorous at first glance, but deep within there is an indescribable sadness and resignation. They depict the current state of affairs, such as sick children, faces with the mark of death on them, people suffering from tooth decay, people suffering from hemorrhoids, and people who are emaciated and reduced to just skin and bones.
