For hundreds of years, the Makonde people have been carving masks (mapiko) for use in their ceremonial and festival dances. However, the masks shown here are carved from African ebony and are of no practical use. Makonde carvers use the remains of African ebony roots, branches, natural lumps and rotten holes to create unique masks.
