George Lilanga, a Makonde sculptor, was the only artist whose diverse artistic endeavors included batik, drawing, printmaking and painting in addition to sculpture.
He started painting in the Tingatinga style in the early 1990s. Lilanga's paintings do not depict birds or animals like the Tingatinga artists, but instead depict fairies that appear in dreams in a semi-abstract, deformed way, creating comical fairy figures with large ears and mouths.
