Shetani

The word shetani comes from "Satan" and was introduced by Arab traders to the people living on the coasts of Tanzania and Mozambique. The Makonde people refer to shetani as a creature or spirit that is not considered to be an animal. Shetani is a legendary fairy that helps or troubles people at whim, and is said to be able to change into a human, animal, or monster as it pleases.
Many Shetani artists have emerged among the Makonde sculptors, who freely incorporate ethnic legends, events from dreams, and hopes into their works.
